Although Maharishi Patanjali labels the pancha klesha as the hindrances to spiritual growth, they are in effect, the deep-seated psychological afflictions, inborn in every human, which hinder our personal lives on every level and disrupt the entire social order of mankind.
Indeed, most of our problems, individually, and collectively as cultures and societies, stem from these five psychological encumbrances.
Maharishi Patanjali goes on to tell us that the practice of kriya yoga (the yoga of mental purification), consisting of tapas (disciplined effort), svadhyaya (self analysis) and Ishwara pranidhana (surrender to the Divine will) is the means to destroy these five mental afflictions and to attain the state of samadhi or Oneness with the Supreme Self or the Divine.
Certainly, much is to be gained on both the personal and societal front through the mitigation of the influences of the pancha klesha...
